Lunar Passages
Many times during each month the Moon passes by bright stars and planets.
A thin waning crescent Moon rises very close to the reddish star Antares in Scorpius. From my home in the the mid-west the two will be seperated by about 10 arc minutes. Toward the northeast United States this will be an occultation event.
Another object that may be just discerned with binoculars is the globular cluster M-4. Also known as the Cat's Eye, this is a 7-8th magnitude object and is about 1.5 degrees away from Antares.
This graphic shows the sky at 0600 CST on the 11th of January.
